Non-violence: Garrett goes postal

So I felt like getting a little rascally over on Kyle's blog about some nice pro-animal veggie-type treehugging issues. A predominantly Christian, speculatively right-of-center audience will likely not take kindly to my ramblings, but I thought maybe some non-violent Sparkgrassateers might want to peruse the fray, if only to watch me be as squirrely as possible.

I liked your response to the whole deer hunting issue. Growing up in a rural mountain town, I've seen the good and the bad of deer hunting and the bad is downright chilling. It's not so much the destruction of the animal (though that certainly is lamentable, even when necessary), but the effect it has on people, especially those who start very young. I've witnessed in classmates how the wrong mindset regarding hunting leads to children learning to take immense pleasure in the suffering of other creatures. I knew several people who were taken hunting as soon as they were physically able and developed a disturbing sort of bloodlust at a very young age, people who later grew into volatile, compassionless, dangerous adolescents.

So, yes, your concern over 'moral development' seems spot-on to me.
