Politics: Alabama catching up

Fifty years ago, the courts told Alabama it wasn't cool to have segregated schools. Alabama kicked and squealed a little, but they desegregated. But they never took the laws off the book, and that doesn't particularly bode well when, say, you're looking to move your industry to a state that doesn't think it's important to bury the past with an eraser. So that's what Alabama is trying to do: scratch evil from the books.

The article doesn't quite explain this very well, but guess who opposes axing the law? Roy Moore, the Alabama Chief Justice who was sent packing because he wouldn't follow a higher court himself and remove the Ten Commandments from the Alabama courthouse. Moore says he opposes it b/c somehow the change of law would lead to some sort of tax increase. Maybe he has a point, I have no clue, the article doesn't explain it. Is it ironic to anybody else that the dude who doesn't understand separation of church and state also doesn't understand why it's important to not have hate legislation on the books? What a great victory for hateful jerks everywhere, to have a leader like Roy Moore. Moore is widely thought to be revving up to run for governor of Alabama in '06.

The article also points out:

Four years ago, Alabama repealed a ban on interracial marriage, but 40 percent of the state voted in favor of the ban.
Sad.
