Politics: House defeats gay marriage amendment

The ABC news article says they emphatically defeated it, but I don't quite think that a 227-186 vote, 49 shy of the 2/3 majority required, really qualifies as emphatic defeat, sadly. I think this is a great reason why we need to oust the 'Pubs in the house--they're dangerous that they can get a simple majority vote on hate legislation. Now to be fair: 36 dems voted for this thing, and 27 pubs voted against it. If any of these pubs were up against any of these dems in a head-to-head, I would have no hesitation to vote for the neocon over the socially-absymal dem.

That might be the only criteria that might make me vote for a Republican. If a pro-gay neocon ran against an anti-gay Dem (there are plenty in office, especially in my home state), I'd vote for the neocon. And my soul would be intact! Quote me on that. Unless the neocon wanted us to kill lots more brown people 'without a plan for the peace' (not as catchy as you'd like, eh John?), then I might have to do some more thinking.

And let me just ask the world, why BOTHER with these constitutional amendments? Our generation, or the generation of our children, will overturn this hateful bullshit. Why make us have to spend another zillion dollars on ballot referenda just so we can discriminate against a few queers in the meantime? Is it worth it, just to make sure a few lesbians can't see each other in the hospital, and a few gay guys can't get health insurance?

I love my wife, and I'm absolutely sure that if my gay friends got married, I would love her just as much. I also grew up strict Southern Baptist, so I do well understand the religious convictions that lead somebody to be totally against gay marriage--and I understand that the opinion is not meant to be hateful. But ignorance isn't always bliss.
