Law and Politics: Cops call immigration bill unenforceable
This is from the AZ Republic about a state law that would criminalize undocumented immigrants and make some guilty of felony (sound familiar?), along with empowering police to question the immigration status of anyone (Hispanic). And the response from law enforcement?
"We don't have enough cops on the streets to handle the problems we've got today and now they want us to go into the back of Filiberto's and arrest the poor dishwasher while somebody is getting carjacked in the middle of the street?" said Jake Jacobsen, president of the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association. "That's just a bad idea."People say that the states are "Laboratories Of Democracy", well maybe congress should start looking at the data before they propose and pass legislation that border states don't want and don't need.
Critics say illegal immigrants would stop reporting crimes and cooperating with police as witnesses, as would legal immigrants who could fear being caught without their papers. Even legal residents could find themselves having to prove they are U.S. citizens.
Police, money and limited resources would be better spent by officers targeting violent and property crimes instead of trying "to hunt down landscapers, maids and those whose sole offense is being in the country illegally," Eric Edwards, executive director of the Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police.
