Politics: Suppress the black vote in Detroit?

If we do not suppress the Detroit vote, we're going to have a tough time in this election.
That's from Republican Michigan state legislator John Pappageorge. Detroit is 80% black. Hmm. No, the Republicans don't have racists in their midsts. Nosirreebob.

Thanks to Rhea for the link.

you do realize that the vote in question is about medical marijuana use, not the presidential election, right?

I'm not seeing how you guys are proving a point. Sure, medical marijuana. Ok, maybe the guy isn't a racist in the sense of wanting blacks to use a separate water fountain, but either this guy is an idiot who horribly mispoke, or you'll have to do better than sending me an opinion article to convince me that there aren't racial undertones to the statement. Either way, you don't see democrats making statements like this. At least, I haven't.

You've never known Democrats to make racist remarks? Are you talking historically or present day? You'd be hard pressed to defend all Democrats historically since Robert Byrd served as a Kleagle (organizer position) in the KKK and filibustered against the Civil Rights Act, once writing in 1945 to his Senator regarding an integrated army, "Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."
For more present day remarks, I guess you could look at Corrine Brown, a Representative, who called Robert Noriega a "white man" and when he corrected her and said he was a Mexican-American said "you all look alike to me."

Racism is rampant in this country and trying to claim that only Republicans are racists is just ridiculous. Democrats share in it as well.

Peace be with you.

Oh, yeah, and let's not forget Hillary Clinton introducing a Mahatma Ghandi quote with "He ran a gas station down in St. Louis."

Or John Kerry, "President Clinton was often known as the first black president. I wouldn’t be upset if I could earn the right to be the second."

I didn't say Democrats never said things that were racist. I said Democrats don't make statements like this, i.e. about suppressing the black vote, or the vote of any minority group.

democrats don't try to suppress votes? what about their dirty tricks in trying to get nader off the ballot in many states?

mikey!

Last time I checked, you can still write in Nader on any of those ballots. That's not voter suppression, and definitely not racial voter suppression.

And believe me, I agree with you that Dem tactics against Nader are DISGUSTING. Sure, I'm pro-dem, but you can find more than a few posts where I roast them for asinine things, mainly there willingness to stick up for homosexual rights.

But what is your point? The point of this thread is suppression of a black vote. And I'm not quite saying that dems are so refined that their shit doesn't stink, and that there aren't any ignorant, racist dems. I'm sure there are. But at least dems go through some sort of mental training somewhere in there that teaches them to not say things about suppressing a particular race's vote. Calling it being politically correct, if you want. I'll call it not being a moron.
