Dr. Joseph Murray performed the first kidney transplant at then-Brigham Hospital in Boston on Dec 23, 1954.
NPR has a nice piece on the procedure. Richard Herrick lived 8 years after the procedure, amazingly. His twin brother, Ronald, is still alive.
